When you want to have your most successful year in business yet, where do you start? If you’re like most entrepreneurs you’re going to start by setting your goals and planning your targets for the year. If that’s you then you’re going to love the tips in this post about how to setup your goals so that you can follow through with clarity and focused action that is going to accelerate your results.

In this post we are going to cover:

  • The secret to achieving your goals (hint: it isn’t motivation)

  • A more effective formula for goal setting

  • The simple yet often overlooked step to increase your likelihood of achieving your goals by 42%

Start with your goal purpose

Here’s a little secret about achieving your goals. It isn’t motivation that creates results, it’s action. There will be times when you get out of alignment and you may not feel very motivated, but your commitment to take consistent action anyway will create results.

How can you set yourself up for success to be consistent even at times when motivation fades? Take the time to set your goal purpose. Before you create an action plan, get clear on your “why” so you can come back to it at any time and tap into the reason why you started.

A more effective formula to set your goals

You can dramatically increase your follow through on your goals by improving how you state your goals. Here’s an important tip to remember when goal setting: state your goals in the positive, focus on the result, and make it actionable.

For example, as a new business owner you might want to invest in content marketing. So you might set the goal “I want to start a blog”. A more effective way to state the goal in the positive, focusing on the result, and making it actionable would be, “I want to post one blog post on [x topic] this week.”

Write your goals down

One simple yet effective tip for working smarter not harder towards your goals, and using the power of your mindset, is: write your top level goals down. Did you know, you’re 42% more likely to achieve your goals when you write them down?

A study at the Dominican University in California uncovered this finding attributed to what is called the “generation effect.” Essentially, you’ll have a better memory for information you’ve “generated”, for example writing it down, than for information you’ve passively consumed.

Also, your subconscious recognizes the importance of something you generate in your conscious awareness. In other words, by writing down your goals you are reinforcing the importance to your brain.
